IRS2Go Is Going Away: The IRS Launches a New Mobile App

The IRS has launched a new official mobile app. It will replace IRS2Go and give taxpayers access to more services directly from their smartphones.

For more than a decade, IRS2Go offered several basic tools. For example, taxpayers could check their refund status and find free tax-filing resources.

Now, the new IRS app offers much more.

What Can You Do With the New IRS App?

After securely signing in, taxpayers can:

  • check the status of a tax refund or amended return;
  • view available account balance information;
  • make payments and review payment history;
  • view certain IRS notices and letters;
  • access available tax records and transcripts;
  • manage certain profile and communication preferences;
  • access their Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN).

According to the IRS, this is only the beginning. In addition, the agency plans to add more features and services over time.

Do You Need to Download a New App?

If you already have IRS2Go, you do not need to download a separate app.

Instead, IRS2Go will automatically update to the new IRS app if automatic updates are enabled.

Meanwhile, new users can download the app for free from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Will the App Replace IRS.gov?

No.

The new app provides mobile access to selected features of the IRS Individual Online Account.

However, IRS.gov and the agency’s online accounts will continue to operate. Taxpayers can still use them to access tax information, forms, guidance, tools and other services.

In addition, the Business Tax Account and Tax Pro Account will remain available through IRS.gov. For now, the mobile app includes only selected features of the Individual Online Account.

One More Thing to Watch Out For: Scams

The new IRS app also creates another opportunity for scammers to imitate the agency.

Therefore, the IRS recommends downloading the app only through verified IRS links. You can also use the official listings in the Apple App Store and Google Play.

In particular, be careful with links in unsolicited text messages, emails or advertisements. Some may claim to provide access to your IRS account.

Remember, the IRS will not ask for sensitive personal or financial information through an unsolicited text, email or pop-up message.

If you are unsure whether an app or message is legitimate, do not click the link. Instead, go directly to IRS.gov and find the official service there.

Overall, the new app should make routine interactions with the IRS easier. More tax services will now be available directly from a smartphone.
